Looking for a quick breakfast that will keep you satisfied until lunch? This homemade sourdough egg in a hole is just the perfect quick, week day morning breakfast.

The Name
Egg in a hole is one of the few names this dish has. It is also referred to as “bullseye eggs”, “egg in a nest”, “egg with a hat”, and many more. The dish, regardless of the name, consists of buttered bread with a center hole removed and a fried egg cooked in the middle. Of course, you can get creative with flavors and variations to make it with your family’s favorites.

The Bread
Personally, we love using sourdough bread for our family. The bread options are endless, but we love the way the sourdough toasts with the butter. Plus, sourdough has so many health benefits due to the grains being fermented. But when I don’t have sourdough on hand, I’ve used many other variations and they’re all delicious.

The Egg
When it comes to the egg of your egg in a hole, you can cook to your preference on how done the yolk is. However, I will say that I do not usually prefer a runny yolk on its own, but with the piece of sourdough toast to soak it up it is so yummy!

The Toppings
To jazz it up a bit we have tried so many different toppings that we love. Our current go to is a garlic and herb goat cheese spread on top. Oh my goodness, it is so delicious! We also love fresh or candied jalapeños, fresh spinach, or sliced avocados on top. Again, the options are endless and I’m sure you and your family we come up with delicious options, as well.
Homemade Sourdough Egg in a Hole
This recipe is so super simple and requires only staple ingredients that you probably have on hand at all times. Start with a slice of bread and cut a hole in the center. You can use a knife or cup to do this, it does not need to be precise. Don’t throw away your hole after you remove it, toast it too! Then butter your bread on both sides and place in a heated skillet. Crack one egg into the hole in the bread. Salt and pepper to taste and then cover with a lid until the egg is cooked to your preference. When using the lid I don’t flip the toast, I just let the steam cook the egg through. But if you’re not using a lid, carefully flip the toast after a couple minutes and again cook the egg to your liking. It’s now ready to serve and enjoy, feel free to add any toppings you or your family like! It’s also great served with a side or fruit or fried potatoes for a more complete breakfast meal.

Homemade Sourdough Egg in a Hole
Ingredients
- 1 egg
- 1 slice bread
- 1 tbsp butter
Instructions
- Slice your bread and remove small hole from center.
- Evenly coat both sides of bread with butter.
- Place buttered bread in skillet on medium heat.
- Crack egg into hole in center of bread and top with salt, pepper, and/or garlic to taste.
- Cover skillet with lid and allow to cook for about 7 minutes. *This time is if you like your egg runny, if you prefer to have a more done/hard yolk then you'll need to cook longer to your preference.
- Remove egg in a hole from skillet and place any additional toppings on before serving. * We like to add cheese on top, so for this instance I add the cheese a couple minutes before the egg is done to allow cheese to melt.
- Enjoy!
