Hello, my name is Kaitlin Thornberry and I want to welcome you to our blog Homegrown Thornberries! I grew up in southern West Virginia spending the majority of my free time in the kitchen with my mom and grandmother. When I was too young to actually help them cook, I remember just sitting in the floor and watching them. I’ve always loved being in the kitchen with them as they made homemade meals for our family.
The thing about cooking with them is that they do it until “it looks good and tastes better”. Meaning they don’t use measuring cups or tablespoons. But most importantly, they cook with love – which you can taste in every bite.
I’ve spent time recreating some of their southern homemade recipes with measured out ingredients. I’ve recently gotten married and moved to western North Carolina with my husband, Stefan. We love cooking together and have enjoyed experimenting with different ingredients and coming up with some recipes of our own. Stefan is my biggest encourager, taste tester, and tech support. This blog wouldn’t exist without him.
My husband and I both work as physical therapists, which sometimes means long hours. We also like to eat healthy and take care of our bodies, therefore what we fuel ourselves with is important. So having a repertoire of homemade recipes in our homegrown toolkit that we can make on a weeknight is vital. We have a huge sweet tooth so you’ll find lots of homemade desserts on our blog, some healthy and some not so much – but chocolate is good for the soul! We also love spending our free time exploring the outdoors with our dog, so you can find some recipes for trail/camping food here, as well.
So we hope you come and join us for a culinary journey through our kitchen to yours!
